David Fenoglio

David Fenoglio is an artist based in Brisbane/Meanjin, Australia. A 2011 graduate of Queensland College of Art, Fenoglio has exhibited nationally and internationally. After graduating he spent a year in Europe, mostly traveling through Italy, visiting museums, studying paintings, drawing and working on farms.

Following this, David spent a month in New York studying drawing and painting at the Grand Central Atelier. He is currently focused on pursuing a representational art practice through oil painting and drawing.

While situated in a contemporary context, he draws inspiration from the natural world and art history.

Fenoglio’s approach to painting is based in a historical and technical study of the practice. His work is mostly known for the restrained and contemplative still life paintings. Subjects often hold organic or mineral substance and speak beyond materiality. His approach is in tune with natural realism and he pushes this approach in subtle ways through exploring the visual experience. His ability to make simple spaces and objects, feel, not only look natural is achieved through technical exploration and study of oil painting from the lived experience. The results are elegant and ethereal.

“The time spent looking and contemplating through painting is a meditative experience. I hope for this experience to be held in the paintings and offered to the viewer to experience some calm and contemplation."

Fenoglio has recently been a finalist in the Archibald Portrait Prize in 2022, Doug Moran Portrait Prize 2022 and previously won the Rick Amor Drawing Prize in 2021.
