New exhibition by Joachim Froese

The gallery is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition Numismatics by Joachim Froese will opening Saturday 18th April.

It was Alexander of Macedon whose portrait graced a coin for the first time around 300 BC.  Countless regions, national hero, politicians, dictators, philosophers and cultural figures who shaped the societies they emerged from followed.  Ever since, money has been a mirror of power and coins have been crucial contributors to forge national identities around the globe.

My images focus on the heads depicted on currencies from around the world and all references to their monitor value have been removed through Photoshop.  Out of context and size some of these portraits look like ancient sculptural reliefs.  They reflect on the changing appearance which money is developing in our societies and simultaneously pay homage to artworks, which more often than not, go through our hands without recognition.  Joachim Forese.
