Aaron Butt - Missed Encounter (A grid of objects from lightest to darkest and largest o smallest)’ 2018 selected by Dr Campbell Gray as winner of the Highly Commended Award, Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2018.
From the Judge’s comments. It is clear in this work that no one thing is the work of art. Indeed, some elements (perhaps most) appear to be cast-offs or failed experiments, hence from superficial inspection one might read the work as a deceit. However each element, while perhaps individually unimportant, has a significance that becomes apparent as an essential element of a collection. The viewer is asked to link the pieces and aggregate that ideas - their content and their status. But more than this, this work deftly negotiates the politics of the space and the institution that present it, as well as the terms and conditions of the Sunshine Coast Art Prize itself. It declares what it is while at the same time critiquing it.
Congratulations to Aaron Butt and to the De Deyne Family for their generous support of the Award.
